When we first learn about numbers, we begin with the Natural numbers, 1, 2, 3 ... After awhile, we are introduced to the idea of zero, and can now work with the Whole numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3 ... As you get more sophisticated, you can start to understand numbers that are less than zero, which are called negative numbers, The set of Integers is ... -3. -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ... The idea of a negative number and performing math operations with negative numbers is extremely important in moving forward with understanding math ideas.
