An absolute value is the distance a number is away from zero on a number line. Since distance is always positive, the absolute value will always be positive. The absolute value of -3 is notated like | - 3 | = 3 units from zero. (Note that | 3 | = 3 as well, because it is also a distance of 3 units away from zero on a number line.)
